Kaps for Kids
Monday evenings year around at 6:30pm, Fellowship Hall comesalive with knitters. Kaps
for Kids, the brainchild of Kathy Chancellor, was conceived in 2007.. Each year the caps
are knitted and given to the Angel Tree (Christmas) Program of the Salvation Army in
Shawnee.
The first year, 300 caps were given with love from the group. Each year numbers have
grown, both the numbers of knitters involved and the number of caps lovingly made. The
second year, a goal was set for 500 caps and 700 were completed. This year, 2009, at
total of 1187 caps were completed--1151 donated to the Angle Tree and 36 given to our
own CDC children as a gift from the church. This year, a label which says, "A Prayer for
You. First Christian Church" was sewn into each cap, which meant sewers as well as
knitters were needed. The members have invested more than 3,000 hours into the
ministry, and hundreds of dollars of yarn, all of which is donated.
The group always welcomes new knitters or people willing to hand sew the tags into the
ca
ps.
Hospital Baskets One of the newest ministries of Shawnee First Christian Church is the Hospital Basket.
Working with Unity Hospital, the Witness and Mission Committee provides the hospital
with baskets to be shared with someone who is a visitor in Shawnee and has, because of
an accident or sudden illness, been forced to remain in town with a hospitalised spouse,
friend, child, etc. The baskets contain things that hopefully make the person a bit more
comfortable. Each basket includes a New Testament, snacks, puzzle book, ink pen,
pencil, eraser (of course!), and such other items as a novel, chap stick, bottled water.
Each filled basket is wrapped with cellophane and tied with a ribbon with a note from
Janet Peery and Ray Belford, Interim ministers of the church.
Since the first baskets were delivered in late June, five have been shared.
As a fund raiser to support the basket ministry, the Witness and Outreach committee will
be selling "We're in the Crosswalk" shirts. About 15 years ago, the church sold this type
shirt and many are still wearing theirs today. They come in red, green, blue, and orange
and have crosses of all sizes on the back. There will be polo-type and tee shirts. Order
forms will be available at the church office and payment should be made at the time you
place your order. The 50-50 blend shirts are $22, the 100% cotton are $20 and the
Tees, which are 100% cotton are $15. Call 405-275-1519 or stop by the church during
office hours for a form. Orders should be placed by the end of October.

Pumpkin Patch
Car Show
For nine years, on one of the Saturdays during the Pumpkin Patch, the parking lot comes alive with cars of all ages, shapes, and colors when the annual car show takes place!
Faith 7 Breakfast 
The premier basketball players from the high schools in Texas meet the premier basketball players from the high schools in Oklahoma at Oklahoma Baptist University to play a charity
game for the Faith Seven School in Shawnee. For many years, First Christian Church has hosted this elite group of young Christian men for a fellowship breakfast before the game.
After the meal, all the players sign a basketball that is kept on display at the church. Between fifty and sixty players and their coaches are served each year.
